Contributions to Society
Contributions to the Development of Modern India
Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries,
Anglo-Indians played a significant role in many sectors of Indian society.
Railways
Perhaps no institution is more closely associated with
Anglo-Indian history than the Indian Railways. Large numbers of Anglo-Indians
worked as station masters, guards, locomotive drivers, signal operators,
clerks, and engineers. Railway colonies became important centers of
Anglo-Indian social life and helped shape community identity.
Cities such as:
- Kolkata
(Calcutta)
- Chennai
(Madras)
- Bengaluru
(Bangalore)
- Secunderabad
- Lucknow
- Jhansi
- Kharagpur
developed strong Anglo-Indian populations connected to
railway employment.
Education
Anglo-Indians contributed significantly to education in
India. Many worked as teachers, principals, and administrators in
English-medium schools.
Several prestigious institutions developed close ties with
the community, including:
- La
Martiniere Schools
- St.
Xavier's Schools
- St.
Joseph's Institutions
- Loreto
Schools
- Bishop
Cotton Schools
The emphasis placed on English education helped many
Anglo-Indians excel in teaching, administration, and professional careers.
Military and Public Service
Many Anglo-Indians served in:
- The
British Indian Army
- The
Royal Indian Air Force
- Customs
services
- Postal
services

departments
